<p>The production report cards completed daily by employees at Premier Manufacturing Corporation’s two facilities easily generated mountains of paperwork each week. Several hundred carbon-copy production cards accumulated into boxes with other hand-written notes. Each contained data from job operations including direct labor, quality reports, and downtime.</p>
<p>“Every year, we had a truckload of paperwork,” remarks David Barna, CFO of Premier Manufacturing. “We knew this system caused wasted time, energy, and resources.”<br />
Despite the information overload, Premier knew that managers had very little data at their fingertips. “We struggled to interpret the cards,” Barna says, noting that difficulty reading and transposing numbers slowed the production analysis process and introduced inaccuracies.</p>
<p>What’s more, managers had to wait for data entry personnel to translate information from cards to computer systems. The process was haphazard and time consuming. Worse, problems often weren’t identified until it was too late to fix them. “We wanted to collect data directly from each machine without requiring data entry,” Barna says.</p>
